Can a student remove material from their academic record under FERPA?

Under FERPA, students have the right to access their educational records and review the information contained within them. While students can request access to understand the content of their academic records, they do not have the ability to unilaterally remove or alter materials in those records. FERPA provides rights regarding the privacy and access of educational records but does not grant students the power to erase or modify the information that is deemed to be accurate by the institution.

The rationale behind this is to maintain the integrity and accuracy of educational records. Institutions are required to retain certain records to ensure compliance with federal regulations and to provide an accurate history of the student's academic performance. Students can, however, request the institution to amend the record if they believe it is inaccurate or misleading, but this process involves a formal request and is not simply a matter of removing records at will.
